Mass storage is a generic term for any device that can permanently hold data. Mass storage devices are required because memory (RAM) loses its data when the computer is turned off. Without a mass storage device attached to your computer, you'd lose your data every time you turned off your computer. Mass storage has taken many forms over the years as technology has advanced. At one time, punch cards and later floppy disks were the preferred mass storage medium but both have been replaced with bigger and faster devices. The most commonly used mass storage devices in today's PCs are hard drives, CD/DVD drives, and flash memory devices such as USB flash drives and memory cards in digital cameras. Tape drives, mostly used by large businesses to backup data, are another form of mass storage.
